Speaker One: Betsy Reynolds, RDH, MS is armed with degrees in dental hygiene and oral biology and presents scientifically based dental hygiene continuing education programs nationally and internationally. She speaks on a variety of topics involving the biologic basis for oral and systemic disease prevention, microbiological and immunological aspects of oral disease, implications of stress on oral and systemic health, oral pathological concerns, head and neck anatomy and scientific developments affecting oral health care delivery. Betsy is committed to presenting programs including current research involving links associated with oral inflammation and heightened risk of heart attack and stroke.

Course title: Boning Up on Bone: Considerations of Bone Metabolism and Disease in Oral Health

Course Description: Periodontitis can be considered the most prevalent ‘bone disease’ affecting older adults—it has been estimated that the majority of the American population over 65 years of age has mild, moderate or severe alveolar bone loss.  Bone metabolism is also be compromised by a variety of systemic diseases and disorders.  Most believe osteoporosis to be the major public health threat to bone health. While osteoporosis deserves much clinical consideration, oral healthcare providers may be less aware of other maladies affecting normal bone metabolism.  This course will explore the pathogenesis and oral manifestations of variety of conditions affecting bone metabolism in an effort to enlighten and inspire clinicians.

Participant learning objectives: Following this presentation, the course participant will be able to:

·       Understand the dynamics and clinical manifestations of osteitis deformans (‘Paget’s disease’)

·       Recognize the impact of nutritional deficiencies on bone metabolism

·       Relate the impact of stress hormones on bone health

·       Review the function of the parathyroid in bone metabolism

·       Appreciate the connections between overall and oral bone health

Speaker Two: Dr Uche Odiatu DMD has a BA (psychology) and DMD (dentistry) from the University of Manitoba. He has taken extensive post-graduate training in the mouth-body connection and cosmetic dentistry, particularly whitening. He is an internationally recognized wellness & performance expert. Uche is a practicing dentist and NSCA certified personal trainer, a holistic lifestyle coach, media Personality (ABC 20/20 & Canada AM), a professional member of the American College of Sports Medicine & the co-author of the books, The Miracle of Health and Fit for the LOVE of It! He is an energetic dentist who lectures internationally sharing his unique insights on the mouth-body-mind connection. He specializes in oral and overall health, gut flora and fitness.
